How do I claim shares back from the IEPF?
The short answer
An IEPF claim runs through two parties rather than one: the company whose shares they were, and the IEPF Authority. The company's nodal officer has to verify the claim before the authority will release anything, and that two-sided process is what makes these claims slower than ordinary transfers.
The shares are released in electronic form, so a demat account is needed to receive them.
Which of these is you?
The route changes depending on your situation. Open the one that matches — you can ignore the rest.
Confirming the transfer actually happened The step people most often skip.
Not every dormant holding has gone to the IEPF. A holding still on the company register is claimed an entirely different way, and a claim filed through the wrong route can sit for months before anyone says so.
Establishing who is entitled Straightforward in your own name, more involved as an heir.
Where the original holder has died, entitlement has to be established before the claim can proceed — and in practice the transmission and the IEPF claim are handled together rather than one after the other.
What the authority accepts as proof depends on whether a nomination was registered and whether there is a will.
The verification step Where most of the waiting happens.
The company's nodal officer verifies the claim before the authority acts. Where a company is slow to respond, has changed hands, or no longer has a functioning investor-relations function, this is where the delay sits. It needs persistent follow-up rather than resubmission.
If a claim was rejected before Usually fixable.
Rejections are generally about documentation or mismatched details rather than entitlement. A previously rejected claim can be refiled once the underlying issue is identified and corrected.
