What are unclaimed shares, and how do people end up with them?

The short answer

Unclaimed shares are holdings that still exist on a company's register but that nobody is actively tracking. They have not been sold, cancelled or forfeited — the connection between the owner and the record simply broke.

They do not expire. A holding from thirty years ago is as valid today as it was then, and it belongs to the original shareholder or their heirs.

Which of these is you?

The route changes depending on your situation. Open the one that matches — you can ignore the rest.

How a holding becomes unclaimed Four causes account for most cases.

A family moved and the register kept the old address. A company changed its name, merged, or demerged, and the paperwork stopped matching. A shareholder died and the family never found the certificates. Or a bank account closed and dividend credits started failing silently.

None of these affects ownership. They affect whether anyone can find the holding.

Where the shares actually are One of two places.

Either still on the company's own register, or transferred to the IEPF if dividends went unclaimed for seven consecutive years. Both are recoverable. They are recovered differently, which is why establishing which applies comes first.

What a paper certificate is worth today The holding, not the paper.

A physical certificate cannot be sold or transferred as it is — it has to be converted into electronic form first. But losing the certificate does not lose the shares: ownership is established by the register, and a duplicate can be issued.

The certificate is evidence of the holding. It is not the holding.

Where to start with almost nothing Less is needed than people expect.

A company name and a person's name is usually enough to begin. A search you ran yourself that returned nothing is weak evidence — records match on exact name strings, and a small difference in how a name was recorded is enough to hide a holding completely.
