How does recovering unclaimed shares actually work?
The short answer
Every case follows the same four stages: establish what exists, work out which route applies, prepare the claim, and follow it through. What differs between cases is the route — and picking the wrong one is the single most common reason a claim takes years instead of months.
You are not expected to know which route applies. Working that out is the first thing we do, and it is why the first review costs nothing.
Which of these is you?
The route changes depending on your situation. Open the one that matches — you can ignore the rest.
Stage one — establishing what exists Before anything can be claimed, we have to know what is actually held and where it sits today.
We check the company and its registrar for a holding in the name you give us, following the company through any renaming, merger or demerger along the way. This is also where we find out whether the shares are still on the register or have been transferred to the IEPF — the answer decides everything that follows.
If nothing is found, we tell you plainly rather than keeping a case open.
Stage two — identifying the route The same holding can need very different processes depending on what happened to it.
A holding still on the register, one moved to the IEPF, and one belonging to someone who has died are three different claims with three different sets of documents. Cases involving a lost certificate, a name that no longer matches, or a claimant living abroad each add their own requirements.
We establish which combination applies before any paperwork is prepared, because starting down the wrong route usually means starting again.
Stage three — preparing the claim This is the bulk of the work, and it is the part we take on entirely.
We prepare the forms, declarations and supporting documents the specific route requires, and resolve the mismatches that almost always surface at this point — signatures recorded decades ago, names spelled differently, addresses long out of date.
Where something is missing, we tell you what is needed and why, rather than handing you a generic checklist.
Stage four — following it through Submitting a claim is not the end of it.
Queries come back. Registrars ask for clarification, nodal officers need to verify, and documents occasionally have to be resubmitted. A query is a normal part of the process, not a rejection — but an unanswered one leaves a claim sitting indefinitely.
We manage that correspondence through to resolution so you are not chasing anyone.
