Diagnose 3 questions to narrow it down

I moved house years ago and stopped hearing from the company. What happened?

The short answer

Almost certainly nothing happened to the shares. What stopped was the correspondence.

Companies write to the address on the register. When that address is out of date, dividend warrants, annual reports and notices all go somewhere else and are eventually returned or discarded. The holding carries on existing. If dividends then went unclaimed for long enough, the shares may have been transferred to the government fund — which is recoverable, just by a different route.
